Meet Our Bela Musana Host Committee
Beth Stankard

October 22, 2018

Our upcoming benefit event - Bela Musana - has an illustrious Host Committee. Meet one of its members.

As Head of Human Resources at COACH, Beth Stankard is deeply immersed in the fashion industry. But she also understands people, and one thing she’s noticed in recent years is that employees are coming to her with a desire to do something meaningful. Stankard understands this urge: it’s what connected her to the Paper Fig foundation in the first place.

“For many years I had taken yoga in Amagansett, and the yoga teacher I loved let the class know about this trip she was taking to Africa, and about the Paper Fig Foundation.”

She wanted to learn more, so she attended the first Bela Musana event in 2016.

“I was so impressed with the diverse group of people at the event,” she said. The performance that evening blew her away, and the more she thought about it, the more she wanted to get involved.

“I was at a pivotal point in my life and I thought, ‘Let me get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. So I decided to the take the journey.”

Traveling to Rwanda and Uganda with Paper Fig Foundation, she got to meet Paper Fig Foundation Fellows, to visit the health center, and to learn about the initiatives of the Sew School. Ms. Stankard had been stitched in to the invisible thread.

When Paper Fig Foundation Fellows Cedric Mizero and Claudia Lumor came to New York for Fashion Week the following fall, Beth eagerly opened her doors to them.

“COACH has been in business since 1941 and we have an archive,” she said. “I was able to bring Cedric and Claudia to the archive, and to show them the workshop where the samples are made for runway shows. It was such an honor to host the two of them and be able to share my work experience.”

When asked to be a member of the host committee for Bela Musana, Beth didn’t hesitate for a second.

“As head of HR for COACH, I’m passionate about my true love of the fashion industry and empowering people in our industry to achieve their own personal goals. It’s been exciting to hear from employees that they want to know what they can personally do to give back to the global community. Being part of Paper Fig feels like a natural extension.”
