STORY
The Paper Fig Fellows at NYFW

September 10, 2019

Sylvia Kawalya and Ak Ibrahim are here in New York, and what an incredible experience they are having. They were thrust right into the thick of New York Fashion Week, and they've found themselves standing beside Laurie DeJong, CEO of LDJ Productions, at central command on more than one occasion. From the epic Rag & Bone show to the incredible showing of 12 AAU designers, LDJ Productions puts on many of the most anticipated shows at New York Fashion Week. The Paper Fig Fellows are behind the scenes, helping models get fitted, shadowing makeup artists, and sometimes even standing in when a model doesn't showw up. The people they've met, whether at planned dinners or by chance backstage at a show, will give them a network that can take them both to new heights.

But the mission of the Paper Fig Fellowship is more than just empowering these two individuals with the confidence, skills, and connections to grow their work. It is also about bringing back those skills to empower hundreds if not thousands of others. Both Ak and Sylvia have platforms back home in Kampala, and they know they're expected to use those platforms to help others along the path: economically, personally, and culturally. It's all about empowerment.
